What is Westhavelland? A park northwest of Berlin, in Brandenburg. This area offers incredible spectacles at all times of the year and, we might add, of the day, as it is one of those areas of the world where you can observe the famous phenomena of the aurora borealis. The skies here are some of the darkest in Europe and for astronomy enthusiasts, it can be the ideal destination!What characterises Westhavelland? The Havel River runs through the western part of Brandenburg and then flows into the Elbe River. Needless to say, in winter, the river expands and thousands of Whooper Swan, as well as Greylag Goose, White-fronted Goose, Barnacle Goose stop on the wet meadows.

In the Westhavelland area it is possible to observe the Great Bustards, obviously the best time is in April, when the males are displaying! These magnificent galliformes are the largest birds in Europe able to fly. There are protected areas for them, as they are a threatened species due to the severe loss of habitat they have experienced in recent decades.There are plenty of birding locations, and they are excellent in all seasons of the year: on the Havel and on the lakes it is possible to observe many species of wintering, migrating and breeding birds.It is worth to take part in a multi day tours in the Westhavelland, staying in an Hotel in the Rathenow area.
