In the life of a birder or a wildlife enthusiast, the time will come to visit Basilicata. Did you know that Matera is home to the largest colony of Lesser Kestrel in Italy? They nest in the ‘Sassi di Matera’, a UNESCO site and a very ancient place. There are mythical and wild places, mountains such as the Lucanian Dolomites, with its forests and peaks, with the villages of Castelmezzano and Pietrapertosa, and cliffs where nest Black Stork, Alpine Swift, Eurasian Crag Martin, and Peregrine Falcon.Did you know that Basilicata even overlooks two seas, the Ionian Sea and the Tyrrhenian Sea? There so much to discover!
Matera is one of the oldest cities in the world, the district called “sassi” is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is also the city of the cricket hawks, the black stork, the Egyptian vulture, and is nestled in the Murgia Materana Park and the Gravina stream. Exploring Matera is a unique experience of nature and culture.
My passion fueled my curiosity and together with determination and respect for nature, I managed to become one of the first women to practice birdwatching professionally. I strongly believe in enhancing natural environments and I know how nature is everywhere around us, we just need to train our senses to be able to recognize it better. Would you like to go on a nature discovery trip with me?
Birdstories will be your safe space: diversity and inclusion are celebrated and no form of discrimination will ever be accepted or tolerated
Each itinerary can be customised to be accessible for everybody: this allows anyone to participate and enjoy the joy of a birding and a nature experience.
I personally know the itineraries, I propose and I create them to pass on all my love for the region, promoting places and people who care about the environment.
As a birder, as a lister, you have already spotted thousands of birds all over the world, but if you still have never been to Basilicata, you need to catch up!Birdwatching in Basilicata among the gullies, ravines, abandoned villages, steppes, Mediterranean scrublands and the lunar landscapes of the Craco area is a unique experience. Rare and endangered species such as the Egyptian Vulture and the Black Stork can be spotted, as well as species that are widespread in the Southern Italy such as the Black-eared Wheatear, the Black-headed Bunting, the White-crowned Sparrow and the Sardinian Sparrow. In Basilicata there is a very important breeding population of Lesser Kestrel, and then European Bee-eater, European Roller, Eurasian Hoopoe, Spectacled Warbler, Red Kite, Tawny Pipit and many others.
