You would never guess that in an urban and populated area like Berlin, there could be room for such intense and exciting birding sessions! Yet, even a city like Berlin promises, walking through a park with binoculars in hand, to show us so many species of birds that, being accustomed to human presence, are less shy and are easier to observe. But Berlin is not only cities but also forests, lakes, fields and heaths, ready to show us a grand natural spectacle!
We are in the valley of the Erpe stream and thus a beautiful Berlin natural area. This enchanting place offers various biotypes ranging from small ponds to forests and uncultivated areas but not leaving out vast meadows and old oaks. Here we can find, with a little luck, the kingfisher which, when it appears, lends itself to being observed perched, in flight but also while eating or hunting.
Are you in the middle of downtown Berlin, and in between drinks and museum visits you remember that too much time has already passed without birdwatching? Anything is possible! I take you to one of Berlin's cemeteries: peace, greenery, silence and wildlife. Goshawk, sparrow hawk, crossbill, titmouse, great tit, great spotted woodpecker, green woodpecker, bullfinch, greenfinch, redstart, common redstart, and not only birds, squirrel, fox, marten. My passion fueled my curiosity and together with determination and respect for nature, I managed to become one of the first women to practice birdwatching professionally. I strongly believe in enhancing natural environments and I know how nature is everywhere around us, we just need to train our senses to be able to recognize it better. Berlin is a German city and therefore one with high urbanization.Often people who read the words “ birding” and “Berlin” in the same sentence turn up their noses. Yet I for one was pleasantly surprised at how full of nature this city is in every corner. If you love, as I do, the world of ornithology even immersed in modern civilization and conveniently accessible by the most common transportations, then Berlin is definitely the one for you!
